Look at the picture above. Look at it good. Write down the name. Now, buy it. Wait for it anxiously to arrive. Do a happy dance when it does. Now, read it. Read it again. Underline the important pieces. Put it on your nightstand so it’s the first thing you see when you wake up. Take it with you wherever you go. Talk about it to anyone who will listen. You have something incredibly important in your hands.
It’s your health.
Of course you’ll die. Everyone does eventually.
But how is your life going in terms of health? Are you heading towards heartdisease, cancer, diabetes? Maybe you’ve already received some scary diagnoses. Maybe you’re already on all kinds of medicine. Maybe you don’t feel so great on a daily basis. I know I didn’t. Dr. Greger is here to tell you it does not have to be this way.
You control most of your health. Don’t look at me like that. It’s not a waiting game until you start feeling unwell and growing old. You don’t have to suffer. You can have so much more energy. You can even reverse and heal chronic illnesses. I’m living proof.

Because who doesn’t take health for granted? The people who already lost it. I’m one of them. Although I had a pretty healthy diet (so I thought), I got ill and have missed out on life for almost three years. Read my story here. I hope it inspires you to take your health and energy seriously.
When I just got sick, I hated people just walking through life, eating all the bad things, not working out, stressing a lot, generally ignoring that health is a delicate thing. APPRECIATE YOUR HEALTH, I wanted to scream, IT’S GONE BEFORE YOU KNOW IT. I think I posted a lot of similar quotes on Facebook too in those days.
My bed is where I spent most of my time. The appartment is where I spent all of my time. I rarely went outside. Sitting in front of the window, watching my life pass me by, while feeling ridiculously exhausted. Thinking about all the things I couldn’t do. Wondering if I would ever recover, work, be a mom. Wondering if I would spend the rest of my life feeling like this. It was painfully lonely. I learned a lot.
When I had tried everything I could think of, and tried just about every diet out there, I found Dr. Greger. And I can honestly say that his work saved my life.
I might not have died from my illness. Maybe I would have been an old lady in spite of it. But this was not much of a life, and it could not go on like this. Enough is enough. I started reading How Not To Die and changed my diet accordingly. And now, a few weeks later, I feel like I have my life back. And all of this in a couple of weeks. You read that right. Weeks. I can only imagine how I will feel months from now. I will NEVER take it for granted anymore. From now on I’m going to do everything and anything to help my body stay healthy.
Here I am, on my computer, writing this piece, far in the afternoon. I already had two big walks with my dog. Did some chores. Meditated. I have not napped. This is a huge deal for me. I have all kinds of plans for next week. I feel like I could go look for a tiny, flexible job. I can study again. I feel like myself again.
I want this for you too.
So maybe you say that you feel fine. That’s excellent. What if you could feel even better though? What if how you feel now is more like a 6, and with some changes you can go to a good 9? Maybe you feel fine now, but when you made some changes, you look back and think: “I was less healthy than I thought.” Also, I imagine you like to feel fine for much, much longer. No heartattack at age 50 for you!
So what did I do?
- I upped my fruit and veggie intake. By a LOT (we don’t eat nearly enough).
- which upped my fiber intake
- cut out all animal products (this is essential. No eggs, meat, cheese, milk. Just give it a try, if only for a couple of weeks)
- took some extra antioxidants (tip: a little cacao in your coffee or cinnamon in your smoothie can go a long way)
- more water to flush all the toxins out
- In the second week my energy gradually started rising and kept rising
- Less to no brainfog (confusion, trouble thinking etc)
- Less pain in my gut (no “needle pinches” any more)
- My acne improved
- No pain after doing chores
- No payback (feeling run over by a truck days after you did something, anything. Also called PEM)
- People commented that I seemed to “shine”.
Now, I want to be very clear that I am in no way trained in this field of expertise. I am not a doctor and not a trained nutritionist. All the information I’m giving you comes directly from this book, written by dr. Greger (who is in fact a doctor) and his team. This book is packed with research. If you feel the need to check a particular fact, you can find it in the book or you can ask me and I’ll look it up for you.
You can trust me to be honest when I’m telling you about my own experiences. Having said that, you should know I’m not fully healed yet. I still need to take things slow and take my health into consideration a lot. But how I feel now compared to a few (6?) weeks ago, is a world of difference.
